How Much Sodium Are You Consuming?

Last week we changed-up our client assessment checklist to focus more on nutrition.  We understand that many of our clients struggle with nutrition.  One of our goals here at Transformation Fitness and Wellness is to educate our clients on proper nutrition and how to make better decision when purchasing and eating food.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting sodium to less than 2,300 mg a day — or 1,500 mg if you’re age 51 or older, or if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease.

The average American gets about 3,400 mg of sodium a day — much more than recommended. To help keep your sodium consumption in check, you need to know where the sodium comes from. Here are the main sources of sodium in a typical diet:

  • Processed and prepared foods. The vast majority of sodium in the typical American diet comes from foods that are processed and prepared. These foods are typically high in salt, which is a combination of sodium and chloride, and in additives that contain sodium. Processed foods include bread, prepared dinners like pasta, meat and egg dishes, pizza, cold cuts and bacon, cheese, soups, and fast foods.
  • Natural sources. Some foods naturally contain sodium. These include all vegetables and dairy products such as milk, meat and shellfish. While they don’t have an abundance of sodium, eating these foods does add to your overall sodium intake. For example, 1 cup (237 milliliters) of low-fat milk has about 107 mg of sodium.
  • In the kitchen and at the table. Many recipes call for salt, and many people also salt their food at the table. Condiments may also contain sodium. One tablespoon (15 milliliters) of soy sauce, for example, has about 1,000 mg of sodium.

You have been served…………with mechanically separated chicken! Over a billion sold!

This is what fast-food chicken nuggets, processed frozen chicken meat, and patties are made of.    BARF!!!!!

Here’s the creation process. What they do is take parts of a chicken and put it through this machine that mechanically separate the meat from the bone. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen.  What it does instead is smash EVERYTHING including the bones, eyes and guts making it come out looking like the picture above.

Since this meat is infested with bacteria, it will be soaked in ammonia in order to kill those little critters. But who wants ammonia nuggets? Not I and I’m sure you don’t want any either. So in order to mask the ammonia taste, they season it with a shit load of artificial flavors. [Yup, that will do it]

Right about now, I know what you’re gonna ask. “Hey? How do they get rid of the freakish pink color?”

Dude? That’s what dye is for. So in order to get people to devour this crap, they dye it with artificial colors in order to give it that white texture.

Mmmmm! Mmmm! Taste like chicken. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s the deal with mechanically separated meat. [I’m going to call it MSM for short because I don’t have that much time on my hands.] MSM is a paste like substance that is created by forcing part of an animal carcass into the sleeve of a machine called “Meat Deboner”. So they cram the animal parts into this machine, which grinds up the animal carcasses into a big glob of reddish mush!

So this is what you get in the end.

 

But they’re not done folks. Next, they add ammonium hydroxide to kill the bacterial and then they add anhydrous ammonia for refrigeration purposes. This concoction goes on to become the main ingredient in many hot dogs, bologna, chicken nuggets, pepperoni, salami, etc.

I don’t know about you but my stomach is turning inside and out just typing about this stuff.

It’s not only chicken nuggets that have been MSMed!!!! Most meat companies take the “cheap route” by using the less desirable meat of animals to make food. Meat that is unidentifiable like hot dogs, hamburgers and that stuff you find in frozen dinners. When these meats are Frankensteined created, they don’t really need to retain their appearance, shape or texture. In order to trick consumers, meat companies use artificial flavoring, coloring and preservatives to alter the color, taste and texture of this trash.

Who cares if it’s shaped like a turd. At least it taste good, right?

Now you’re probably asking yourself, “How can they get away with this? Is there no dignity in the Meat Packing Industry?”

The answer? HELLLLLLLLLLL NO!

You see, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), mechanically separated poultry is safe to eat and may be used without restriction.

But before you start organizing an “Occupy USDA” movement, they (the USDA) did state that commercial food products must be labeled as Mechanically Separated Poultry:

Mechanically separated poultry (MSP) is a paste-like and batter-like poultry product produced by forcing bones, with attached edible tissue, through a sieve or similar device under high pressure to separate bone from the edible tissue. Mechanically separated poultry has been used in poultry products since the late 1960′s. Mechanically separated meat may not be described simply as “meat” on food labels, but must be labeled as “mechanically separated” pork, chicken, or turkey in the ingredients statement.

Honestly, how many of you really take the time to read the ingredient labels on your food?

Since there was a big scare about the spread of mad cow disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) the sale of MSM-derived beef products for human consumption in the U.S. was banned in 2004.

However, the United Kingdom decided to take a different route.

Since bits of the spinal cord (the part most likely to be carrying BSE) often got mixed in with the rest of the meat, products using mechanically separated meat taken from the carcasses of bovines were at higher risk for transmitting BSE to humans. The United Kingdom tightened restrictions to help ensure that pieces of the spinal cord would not be present in mechanically separated meat taken from bovines in 1989.[1][2]

Really? How do they go about doing that? Is someone pulling cow spine out of each and every carcass before sticking it into the machine? If you believe that then I have 10 acres of land to sell you in Texas. All you have to do is pay the $400 property tax and the land is all YOURS!!!!! 

 

You might think twice before you go out and grab the processed TV dinner, or even hitting up your local fast food joint.  Make sure you choose wisely on what you put into your body.  Remember the old saying (You Are What You Eat.)  Try to purchase foods that have not been processed or modified (Lean and Green) is the way to go.  If you’re food can stay fresh more than a week then you may want to look at what you are consuming.

 

 

 

Recovery Shakes!!!

An extremely effective (and tasty!) strategy to increase fat loss is to make sure you have a recovery shake post workout.  There are several reasons we at Transformation Fitness and Wellness have recommended post-work out shakes for fat loss- and here are some:

1.      Puts the blood sugar balance in favor of fat loss.  After a workout the blood sugar levels are extremely low, and this is not good for fat loss.  By drinking the shakes to replenish your body, this is the fastest way to get your body in fat burning mode again.

2.     Helps rebuild the tissues in the body that have been stressed by exercise.  This is primarily the job of protein and can be thought of the tools your body needs to repair the body.  If your body can repair muscle, then the metabolism can stay elevated which is crucial for fat loss.  This allows for the body to be in rebuild mode, not tear down mode.

3.     The ingredients are a unique blend of high-quality protein combined with glucose polymers and other carbohydrates.   This gives the body energy and structural support to rebuild after a hard workout.

4.     They taste FANTASTIC!

Make sure you have your recovery shake after each workout to ensure peak fat loss results.

New Year’s Resolution

This may not sit well with you, but it’s something that you need to know, and so we’re just going to come out and say it.

See, the way we see it they’re insulting your intelligence.

Who’s “they”?

THEY are the talking heads you see on TV and hear on the radio. And we’re convinced they’re trying to make you fatter.

Every year at about this time all you see, hear and read about are people making the big three New Year resolutions – more money, quit smoking, and to lose weight.

Now, we don’t know the success rate of the first two, but as fitness experts and professionals who have helped hundreds of folks lose weight and get in better shape, we can tell you (and statistics prove) that most people who resolve to lose weight in the new year are doomed.

In fact, an article we just read on CNN.com said that most people who have a New Year resolution to lose weight will fail.

In the same article, clinical psychologist Mark Crawford of Roswell, Georgia said that one reason people fail is because they sabotage themselves.

We believe this to be true.

We’ve seen it ourselves.

You’ll start off in mid to late December telling yourself that you will commit to losing weight starting the New Year. Over the weeks building up to the New Year you formulate a plan of sorts… to eat less, make better choices, exercise more, and pick up better habits.

And that’s the EXACT roadmap to failure!

And that’s why we’re writing you today – to warn you of this impending doom IF YOU’RE ABOUT TO MAKE THIS “NEW YEAR RESOLUTION” MISTAKE.

Here’s what we mean.

Look, we’re going to be brutally honest with you, because we can’t see the “media” telling you this truth any time soon.
The reason most people fail at losing weight in the New Year is because…

  1. Your goals are probably un-realistic and so you’re already setting yourself up for failure.
  1. You’re unprepared. Sure you have a general idea that you want to lose weight. But you most likely do not have an educated game plan.
  1. Your goals are unclear.
  1. You lack a support system. Because the going WILL GET TOUGH and your support system is what will see you through to your goal.

Imagine going to another country you’ve never been in before. Now imagine if we handed you a GPS but didn’t give you an address (a goal). You’d probably fail at getting to your destination, wouldn’t you?

Now imagine if we said your destination was a house about 150 miles north. Well, you now have a general idea, but you’ll still never get to your destination and therefore fail.

Get the picture?

Now imagine if we handed you a GPS AND gave you the address of the house you needed to end up at.

Once you type your goal destination into the GPS, it will give you VERY specific turn by turn directions AND a very realistic timeline in which you’ll arrive.

Duh!

Makes sense, right?

Yet, nearly 96% of all people who set weight loss goals for the New Year don’t know how much they want to lose.

And if they can pin point a number they want to lose – they still don’t have a “turn by turn” game plan to get there.

Now the reason we’re on this soap box and having this rant is because we’re sick and tired of good people being misled and being told half-truths.

What’s the Big Deal About Fish Oil?

The USDA is now saying if you eat less than five seafood meals per week you should be supplementing with fish oil. There are many, many ways that fish oil benefits the body, but here’s one of the big reasons we all should be taking fish oil supplements. 60% of your brain is made up of fats. Your brain needs fats to thrive and stay healthy and if you feed yourself the healthy fats research shows that you “will not” pack on the pounds.

There are three kinds of omega-3 fats: DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). While all are powerful anti-inflammatory agents the standout choice for brain health is DHA. EPA can be easily converted to DHA in the body while only about 10% of ALA is converted.

The question now is how much fish oil must we take. The USDA is recommending supplementation of 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day with at least 220 milligrams coming from DHA. If you are a regular fish eater then you may be able to take less.  You can pick up some high quality fish oil here.  Arin and I use fish oil every day because it has so many healthy benefits.

The Fitness Professionals at Transformation Fitness and Wellness have been utilizing a program called The 24 Day Challenge with amazing results. The average person is dropping 8-10 ponds and multiple inches of their waist, hips, and thighs. The 24 Day Challenge is not a diet it is a well rounded nutritional and supplement program that fuels the body to burn fat and increase lean tissue.
The 24 Day Challenge starts with the Cleanse Phase Days 1-10. The Herbal Cleanse is designed to help detoxify your body and prepare it for optimal nutrient absorption.
