As a client at Transformation for several years, people like Rob are the reason why we love doing what we do! This is his story!
With Rob’s permission, I want to share with you his very FIRST lesson in fitness. Rob came to Transformation because we were new to his neighborhood and he wanted to check us out. Rearing to go for his first 7 AM session, Rob gave his workout everything he had. I mean this literally, he had NOTHING LEFT and ended up sprawled on the basement floor. His face was ashen with the look that every trainer DREADS… his sugar had plummeted. Tony went rummaging around our house trying to find SOMETHING with sugar in it. (After this adventure we began stocking Gatorade in the studio!) We REALLY needed to go to the grocery store. We had no fruit, no juice, literally NOTHING with sugar in the house. Tony finds my “stash” in despair… ok, I have a weakness! (If you tell anyone my secret, I will deny it!) Tony gives Rob some Hershey’s Kisses and slowly but surely the color, kind of, comes back to his face. Rob was able to peel himself off the floor, truck up the stairs, and drive the three blocks back to his home.
Lesson #1: EAT before a workout!
By the end of Rob’s first package with us, he saw some great results, with a 20 lb. drop in body weight. He decided to try it on his own. When this happens with a client, we let them know that the doors are always open, knowing that we will see them again when they are ready. Rob would later realize that at this point in time, something just had not “clicked” with him. A little later, Rob found a new layer of determination and focus. With renewed faith in his ability to make changes, Rob came back to Transformation. He knew we had the knowledge and would help him.
“Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson
This was Rob’s real turning point along his fitness journey. He took charge, motivated to do whatever it took to move towards his goals. He set his mind and was determined to make it happen. He knew we were here to help and trusted our knowledge and ability to help him achieve his goals. This time would be different!
Rob knew he had to be consistent. He continually lost 1-2 lbs. per week, and if he did not see this type of weight loss he knew exactly what was hindering him. He tracked all his food and drinks- down to the last lifesaver candy! Alcohol reduction was also a big part of this process. He understood that his food consumption correlates with the changes he sees on the scale, or the lack of changes. He told me that he now understands what he has to do to see results—tracking diet, weight training, and cardio. He understands that he will sometimes plateau, but says when it happens he can now accept it and change his mindset. He appreciates the variety that Randy, his trainer, has brought to each session. By constantly changing his workouts, Randy prevents a plateau from continuing.
Rob has had to face a few other battles along the way. The most difficult is accepting that it was going to be a slow change. Learning to eat healthfully was, and is still, a daily challenge. Learning to make his health a priority while traveling for work has been an adjustment as well. Now he brings his workout gear with him wherever he goes; if he isn’t eating perfectly, he knows he must compensate by increasing cardio.
Now, Tony and I see Rob running around the neighborhood. He smiles when I tell him this and says, “Yeah, I actually like running now!” Since he has lost over 80 pounds, running is no longer painful and his recovery time has greatly improved! Rob is continuing to set new fitness goals to keep himself motivated. His most recent goal is the GORUCK Challenge this month. We are so happy with Rob’s transformed habits and lifestyle, but mostly at the impact it has made on him.
